Everyone interested in fencing should buy their own gear. At a minimum this includes two practice weapons, a glove, a mask, a jacket, and an underarm protector.

Once you get a feel for the sport and want to advance then two electric weapons (of the same type), two body cords, and an electric lame (for foil or sabre) and a special mask for sabre fencing.

Basically, fencing equipment is pretty cool stuff and the more you can wear you're own stuff and not wear someone else's sweaty hand-me-downs, the better you'll like it.
